Bike Sizing
What size bike for a 10 year old?
Most 10-year-olds land on a 24" or 26", and 26 is a real option for the first time. But the brands themselves quote inseam ranges spanning 22 to 32.5 inches for this exact age, which is why the answer has to start with a tape measure and not a birthday.

Age is the wrong input. The right one is inseam, and it takes two minutes to get. A 10-year-old at the 50th percentile weighs about 71.1 lb, but body weight and leg length are only loosely related — which is why two children the same age routinely need different bikes.
What the brands actually say for this age
| Model | Age the brand quotes | Inseam the brand quotes | Wheel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guardian 24 | 7–11 yrs | 22" minimum leg length | 24" geared |
| Retrospec Dart Plus 24 | 8–11 yrs | Saddle 26–32.5" | 24" geared |
| woom EXPLORE 5 | 7–11 yrs | 26.4–32.3" | 24" geared |
| Guardian 26 | 10–14 yrs | 24.5" minimum leg length | 26" geared |
| woom EXPLORE 6 | 10–14 yrs | Rider height 55–65" | 26" geared |
Every row read from the manufacturer's own product or sizing page on 2026-09-23. They do not agree, which is the whole problem with buying by age.
Read the inseam column, not the age column. For a 10-year-old the published inseam requirements span 22 to 32.5 inches — a range wide enough to include two different wheel sizes. No chart can resolve that for you. Your child's inseam can, instantly.
How to use your number
Find your measured inseam on the size chart, then check it against the minimum saddle height of the specific model you are looking at. If the minimum saddle height is at or below the inseam, your child can sit and put their feet down. If it is above, the bike is too big, no matter what the age band on the box says.
The 24 to 26 inch crossover
This is the decision that actually matters at 10. A 24-inch bike and a 26-inch bike are not one step apart the way 14 and 16 inch are — 26 inch is the last kid-specific size before a small adult frame fits, and the fit floor jumps hard. woom publishes a 29.9 inch minimum saddle height for the EXPLORE 6; Guardian publishes a 24.5 inch minimum leg length for its 26 inch.
Against that, the 24-inch bikes here start at a 22 inch minimum leg length (Guardian) and a 23.5 inch minimum saddle height (Retrospec Dart 24). So the honest spread at this age runs from a child who still fits a 20-inch to one who already fits a 26, and a tape measure is the only thing that separates them.
The rule we use: if they clear the 26-inch model's published minimum today, with the seat slammed, buy the 26 — a 24-inch bought for a child who outgrows it inside a year is wasted money. If they do not clear it, buy the 24 and do not buy a size up to grow into.
One more figure matters at this age that did not at five: the published rider weight limit. Across the bikes here they run from woom's 135 lb system limit — rider plus bike — to Retrospec's 150 lb rider limit, and a tall 10-year-old is closer to those numbers than most parents expect. Every limit we can find is tabulated on kids bike weight limits.
The weight question, at this age
71.1 lb
Median weight, age 10 (CDC)
29%
A 20.75 lb bike, as a share of that
43%
A 31 lb bike, as a share of that
That second pair of numbers is the argument for spending more than the minimum. A 71.1 lb child on a 31 lb bike is managing roughly the proportional load of an adult wrestling a 77 lb bicycle. We work the arithmetic through in full on why kids bikes are so heavy.
Where to go from here
By now the bike is transport rather than a toy, and every option is geared. The 24-inch shortlist is on best 24 inch kids bikes, the 26-inch options are on best 26 inch kids bikes, and the shifter question — trigger against twist — is on best kids bikes with gears.
Whatever you buy, budget for a helmet in the same order — it is the one accessory that is not optional. Sizing for that is on the kids helmet size chart.

Top pick — The lightest 24-inch

woom EXPLORE 5
The lightest 24-inch in this registry by almost five pounds, with hydraulic discs and eight gears — and the narrowest fit window, because it needs a 26.4 in inseam before it fits at all.
| Wheel | 24" |
|---|---|
| Weight | 20.75 lb |
| Fits inseam | 26.4–32.3 in |
| Saddle height | 27.2–33.1 in |
| Brakes | Promax hydraulic flat-mount disc brakes, front and rear |
| Gearing | 8 speed, microSHIFT Acolyte trigger shifter |
| Frame | Butted AA 6061 aluminum |
| Brand says | Manufacturer says 7–11 years, rider height 49–57 in |
What works
- Published at 20 lb 12 oz — about 33% of the median nine-year-old
- Eight gears with a trigger shifter rather than a twist grip
- Promax hydraulic discs front and rear: one-finger braking, unchanged in the wet
- 5.9 in of saddle travel, 27.2–33.1 in
What doesn't
- 26.4 in minimum inseam is the highest fit floor of any 24-inch here — plenty of seven-year-olds will not fit it yet
- Hydraulic brakes eventually need a shop for a bleed
- Costs several times what a mass-market 24-inch costs

#2 — The lightest 26-inch

woom EXPLORE 6
22 lb 3 oz on a 26-inch wheel with hydraulic discs and eight gears — the lightest bike at this size we have found, and the one a 12-year-old will actually ride to school.
| Wheel | 26" |
|---|---|
| Weight | 22.2 lb |
| Saddle height | 29.9–38 in |
| Brakes | Promax hydraulic flat-mount disc brakes, 160 mm front and 140 mm rear |
| Gearing | 8 speed, microSHIFT Acolyte trigger shifter |
| Frame | Butted AA 6061 aluminum, child-specific geometry |
| Brand says | Manufacturer says 10–14 years, rider height 55–65 in |
What works
- 22 lb 3 oz (woom publishes 22 lbs 3 oz) — over four pounds lighter than the Guardian 26
- 29.9–38 in saddle range, so it carries a rider from about 4 ft 7 in to 5 ft 5 in
- Hydraulic flat-mount discs front and rear, with a trigger shifter rather than a twist grip
- 8 gears, which is enough for a hilly commute without a front derailleur to maintain
What doesn't
- woom's page carried a low-stock warning when we checked on 2026-09-29
- woom publishes rider height but no inseam range for this model
- Low stock moves fast — colorways sell out and reappear
- Costs more than twice what the Guardian 26 does

#3 — The budget 24-inch trail bike

Retrospec Dart Plus 24
An aluminum 24-inch with mechanical discs, a 50 mm fork and a 26 in saddle floor for roughly a third of what the woom costs — and 30.6 lb, which is the figure that decides whether it is right for your kid.
| Wheel | 24" |
|---|---|
| Weight | 30.6 lb |
| Saddle height | 26–32.5 in |
| Brakes | Front and rear Tektro mechanical disc brakes, 160 mm rotors |
| Gearing | 7 speed, Shimano Revoshift twist shifter |
| Frame | Aluminum alloy with a low step-over; 50 mm coil suspension fork |
| Brand says | Manufacturer says 8–11 years, riders 4 ft to 5 ft tall |
What works
- 26–32.5 in published saddle range, 6.5 in of adjustment
- Tektro mechanical disc brakes front and rear, cable-adjustable at home with a 5 mm hex key
- Aluminum frame and a derailleur guard, both missing from the cheaper steel Dart
- In stock in two colorways on 2026-10-01, and widely distributed
What doesn't
- 30.6 lb — about 48% of the median nine-year-old, and ten pounds more than the woom EXPLORE 5
- The 50 mm coil fork adds most of that weight and offers little real control
- Twist shifter and an entry-level seven-speed drivetrain: expect to re-index the rear derailleur
- Retrospec publishes no inseam range, only a 4 ft to 5 ft rider height

Questions parents actually ask
01What size bike does a 10 year old need?
Usually a 24" or 26", and 26 is a real option for the first time. But manufacturers quote inseam requirements spanning 22 to 32.5 inches for this age, so measure your child's inseam and match it to the bike's minimum saddle height rather than relying on the age band.
02How much does a 10 year old weigh?
About 71.1 lb at the 50th percentile, averaging the CDC's published medians for boys and girls. That figure matters because bike weight should be judged as a share of it.
03Should I buy a size up so it lasts?
No. A bike that is too big gets avoided for a season, which costs more than the resale loss on the right-sized bike. Buy for the inseam you measured today.
