First Pedal Bikes

Best bike for a 5 year old

Most 5-year-olds end up on a 16" bike, but the age is the least reliable part of that sentence. A 5-year-old weighs about 39.8 lb at the median, and the bikes sold to them range from 12 lb to over 21 — which is the difference that actually decides whether they ride.

Start with the inseam, not the birthday. Two 5-year-olds can need different wheel sizes, and the manufacturers themselves quote inseam requirements for this age that differ by several inches. Measure first; the picks below assume you have.

What changes at 5

Five is where a child starts riding somewhere rather than just riding. Distance goes up, so weight matters more, not less — a 21 lb bike is fine for two laps of the driveway and exhausting on a mile of bike path. Most five-year-olds are on a 16-inch, and the minimum saddle height is what separates the models.

The second figure is what a good bike asks of them. The third is what a typical mass-market bike asks. Scaled to a 180 lb adult, that third figure is a 95 lb bicycle.

Budget honestly

The lightweight bikes here cost several times what a big-box bike costs, and for some families that is simply not on. The answer is not to pretend otherwise — it is to buy a used lightweight bike. They hold value because they last, and four checks tell you whether one is sound.

The picks

Every figure below is the manufacturer's own published spec, linked to the page we read it from. We have not ridden these bikes and the cards say so — here is how we choose.

Questions parents actually ask

01What size bike does a 5 year old need?

Usually 16", but it is decided by inseam against the bike's minimum saddle height, not by age. Measure before buying.

02What is the best bike for a 5 year old?

The Prevelo Alpha Two or the woom GO 3, depending on inseam — the Prevelo reaches down to a 16.9 inch saddle height, the woom starts at 19 inches.

03How much does a 5 year old weigh?

About 39.8 lb at the 50th percentile, from the CDC's published weight-for-age data. Bike weight is only meaningful against that number.
